An op-ed in the Star Tribune this week underscores the economic importance of research universities. The op-ed cites a Heartland Forward report that recently identified the University of Minnesota as the top university for tech transfer in the heartland and a great example for other institutions looking to improve their tech transfer enterprise.
The report cites UMN’s experienced Tech Comm team, thriving startup incubator, and seed capital programs as well as the creation of industry-leading programs that allow companies low-risk opportunities to “try and buy” new technologies.
UMN has launched 200 startups since 2006 and nearly 75% are based in Minnesota, making the University the largest source of startups in the state.
