Characterizing the Relationship between SLA2 and C1 Proteins in the Yeast Sacromices Cerezisiae

Major

Microbiology

Mentors

Judith Berman: Genetics, Cell Biology and Development

Brief Bio

I enjoy the outdoors and gardening. I am moving to Montana where I hope to do a lot of hiking. I am going to graduate school at Bozeman, Montana.

Future Plans

I would like to continue doing research in an academic or government setting.

Why Research?

I thought microbiologists mostly did research, and I wanted to make sure I liked it.

What Did I Get from Research?

I got a very realistic experience of what research is like. It is not always easy, but if you have tenacity, you can learn a lot.

How Did I Start?

I got a job as a lab attendant. I really liked working in my mentor’s lab, and I thought it would be a good place to learn good technique.

My Advice for Another Student:

I would say go for it. I think that if you are a person who is interested in biological research you need to make sure you like it. The more experience you get the sooner the better.

Research Summary

The project is trying to understand the relationship between the checkpoint proteins and the morphology of the cell. If C1, a checkpoint in the growth of the cell, is not functioning properly, the cell does not continue developing. We wanted to study if the inhibited growth of the cell was related to the c1 checkpoint.
