Project Title: Original computer graphics for The Classical Journal
Research Description: I am the editor of The Classical Journal, a large (circ. 2300) academic journal specializing in ancient culture and literature. One of my projects over the next three years is to radically improve the look and thus the appeal of the journal.
UROP Project: Student with strong skills in computer graphics and design needed to create a collection of small-scale illustrations (most with classical themes; I will provide initial suggestions and constant guidance along the way) to be used in The Classical Journal. This is an opportunity to participate in the production of a high-quality academic journal, and to begin to build a portfolio of published illustrations. Hours flexible. Most work can be done on your own computer and wherever you wish, although we will need to consult on a regular basis by email.
Project Title: Athenaeus of Naucratis: toward a new edition of the text
Research Description: I am currently in the middle of large-scale project to create a new Loeb Classical Library edition of the Learned Banqueters of the Roman-era author Athenaeus of Naucratis (circa 200 CE).
UROP Project: One or two students with strong skills in Classical Greek needed to provide academic support of all sorts for volumes 4-8 of the forthcoming Loeb edition of the Learned Banqueters of Athenaeus of Naucratis. Responsibilities may include but need not be limited to: reference-checking and verification of quotations from ancient authors; proof-reading; index preparation; and basic manuscript work. Familiarity with the standard corpora of fragmentary authors, the standard editions of preserved authors, and other basic research tools will be helpful, although a considerable amount of on-the-job training will be provided. The skills developed in this project will be particularly valuable for advanced students anticipating doing graduate work in classics.
