Recent studies rank Minnesota as the healthiest state in the nation.
Yet, there is a huge gap in health-care access between the upper
middle class and a sizable number of people, many of them people
of color, who are poor, underserved, and at high risk for health
problems.
Addressing this gap—these health disparities—is the
job of Kolawole Okuyemi, professor in the Department of Family Medicine
and Community Health and director of the new Program in Health Disparities
Research, and his colleagues. Understanding and ameliorating health
disparities, he says, are key responsibilities of the University
as Minnesota’s primary
research institution.
Fortunately, adds Okuyemi, the University of Minnesota has an array
of renowned experts, as well as new recruits, to tackle these tough
issues facing our state and will hopefully inspire other states
and countries to pay attention to this dilemma.
