Purpose: To Support RCR Awareness/Discussion
Requirements
- Funding is intended for the development and organization of
learning activities on research/professional ethics topics. UMN
Faculty and principal investigators (PIs) must participate in
and report activities that meet the requirements of continuing
RCR education once every three years. RCR core courses (RCR Parts
1 and 2) do not fulfill the continuing education requirement).
- Grants may be used to cover costs for arranging educational
events on research/professional ethics topics – space rental and
travel/lodging and/or honoraria for guest speakers.
- Grants may be used to cover the cost of conference attendance
and travel by a UMN faculty member when followed by development
or delivery of a research/professional ethics-related educational
activity for a UMN department, college, or other unit.
- Grant proposals will be considered for funding up to a maximum
of $3500.
Eligibility
- Full-time faculty and PIs are eligible to submit proposals
for this grant.
- Recipients of the RCR Continuing Education Awareness/Discussion
grant within the past two years are ineligible for funding.
Selection Criteria
- Application is complete and fully addresses all criteria.
- Proposal meets the criteria for RCR Awareness/Discussion continuing
education activities. For further information please visit the

- Proposed activity/event directly benefits the
broadest possible group of faculty/PIs/graduate students in your
discipline.
- The requested funds fall within given parameters and are clearly
allocated to the development or support of learning activity on
research/professional ethics topics.
- We encourage proposals for cross-discipline activities and
collaborative events where appropriate.
- The proposal illustrates opportunities for active, engaged
learning for participants in proposed events.
- Proposal establishes a presenter's expertise and knowledge
of research/professional ethics, RCR education
policies and principles.
- If the proposal designates funding for attending a conference,
the proposal includes a clear plan for development of a follow-up
research/professional ethics-related educational activity for
a UMN department or college.
- Exclusions: Food and beverage costs; retroactive
requests (for past events); funding for the same person for the
same conference or effort for multiple years; funding for annual
series.
Proposal Procedures
Download and complete a Grant
Proposal Form. Proposals should consist of the following:
- A proposal of no more than 2 pages containing:
- Date of submission
- Your name
- Your position
- Your discipline
- Your campus address
- Target date(s) of the activity or event
- Amount of funding requested
- A brief description of the activity that will be funded
by this grant, including learning objectives and a statement
as to the value of the project to the institution and to the
professional development of participant(s).
- A budget providing itemization of the basic categories
and expenses of this project. If travel is anticipated as
an expense, include transportation, lodging, meals, registration,
etc.
- An explanation of any external or internal funds you may
have already received for this project.
- If activity includes charging a fee for participation,
then that revenue must be used to offset the expenses of the
activity. Awards may not produce net revenue to the PI, department,
or college.
- A completed Proposal Routing Form (PRF): http://egms.umn.edu/
Insert: "OVPR RCR Small Grants" in the item (1)
block on the PRF.
The PRF should not be routed
to SPA, but a printed and signed copy should be included
with the rest of the proposal.
Deadlines and How to Submit Proposals
- 2007-2008 deadlines for this grant:
October 15, 2007, January 30, 2008, April 30, 2008 and June 30, 2008.
- 2008-2009 deadlines for this grant:
October 17, 2008, January 30, 2009, April 30, 2009 and June 30, 2009.

- Applications will be reviewed using the guidelines listed above
and grant applicants will receive notification of a decision within
two weeks of submission.
