Overview of the IACUC Process
1. Applicant completes IACUC form(s) describing the proposed animal use. |

IACUC forms are available to be downloaded. (See Help with Forms & Applying for assistance with our forms.)
Forms must not be handwritten. |
2. Applicant prints off completed application and makes copies. |

12 copies of the form are required for submission plus the original.
1 copy is kept for the Principal Investigator's records.
The Principal Investigator must sign the original application. |
3. Applicant submits form(s) and applicable materials to IACUC office. |
Each IACUC meeting has a deadline for submissions that will be reviewed at that meeting. Check the IACUC Meeting Dates for deadlines.
Forms, copies and other materials can be delivered or mailed to the IACUC office.
For more help with what should be submitted, see Help with forms and applying |
4. IACUC convenes and reviews the proposed animal use. |

The committee meets twice a month to review submissions.
IACUC Decisions:
Approved - the proposed use can proceed once an approval letter has been received. (Usually less than 5 business days after the meeting)
Approved with Stipulations - the proposed use needs to be adjusted for IACUC to grant approval (Stipulations are e-mailed to applicants 3-4 days after the meeting). A response to these stipulations is required by IACUC within 90 days before IACUC will grant final approval and the proposed use can proceed.
Deferred - the committee decided more information or clarification is needed before it can be reviewed. The applicant will be contacted about the specifics of the deferment and how to proceed. |
5. IACUC decision are received by the applicant by mail or e-mail. |

Depending on the decision of IACUC in step 4, the proposed animal use can proceed or continued correspondence with IACUC is required.
The correspondence will describe the outcome and what is expected for future continuing reviews of the animal use. |
Approval for animal display or other service uses
Animals that perform tasks, participate in club activities, or appear in exhibits or demonstrations are also covered and approval for their use must be granted by IACUC.
Examples: the horses used by the St. Paul mounted police, the animals used as models in art classes, and fish displayed in tanks in University buildings.
Contact IACUC about how to obtain approval.
