Animal Request Table Explained: Purchasing, Breeding & Transferring

Animals requested for approval using the Animal Usage Form can be listed as coming from 4 sources in the Animal Request Table (Section 1):

Purchased
Animals are considered purchased if ordered through an outside vendor or bought from another institution.
Produced by in-house breeding
These animals will be bred only for this particular protocol. They will only be used for experimentation approved on this Animal Usage Form.
Transferred
These animals will be moved from an existing approved protocol or an approved breeding protocol to this new protocol.
Other
Animals that exist in the wild and will be observed, captured, or manipulated can be classified as "other".

How Transferring from a Breeding Protocol Works

Transferring of Animals from Breeding Protocol to Animal Protocol

Animals transferred from a breeding protocol or an existing approved protocol should be listed in the "Transferred" column of the Animal Request Table.

Include the IACUC study code # along with the number of animals that will be transferred from the existing breeding or animal protocol.

Once a protocol with transferred animals is approved by IACUC, animals must be transferred through Research Animal Resources (RAR). Fill out the Protocol Transfer Request Form and submit it to RAR.
