Details and Structure
The subject of the proposed conference is to examine the full range
of costs and benefits of RCR education programs in higher education
beyond the dollars and cents involved. The purpose of the conference
is to have an open dialogue with leaders in higher education about
the benefits and costs that universities have incurred from implementing
and maintaining RCR programs.
We have chosen a case study format for this conference, examining
programs aimed primarily at faculty, at graduate students and postdoctoral
fellows, and at administrative staff. The institutions presenting
may have programs targeted at each audience, but we hope to highlight
the specific characteristics and challenges of developoing and maintaining
RCR education programs for each of these audiences.
The discussion will include both theoretical constructs related
to the issues, and practical ideas that can be applied in a variety
of settings. We hope this information will be useful to colleges
and universities that are developing programs, so they can plan
more carefully and justify their costs.
Some questions to be addressed include: how many staff members
at what level are necessary to run a successful program, what are
the measures of benefits that are used to assess success, what are
the indirect costs associated with staff, faculty and administrative
commitments, and what costs have been prevented through improved
education.
The primary target audience will be faculty, administrators, and
staff responsible for RCR programs for faculty, staff, post-docs,
and graduate students. The audience should benefit from participation
in the conference by examining various models of implementation,
their costs, and their assessment.
