In 2016, Allina Health will implement a health equity intervention in its primary care clinics to promote the role of healthcare in reducing disparities. Clinic operational leadership will be given outcomes data by clinic patient demographics (race, ethnicity, language, gender, financial class). The project includes a planning process for a study to run concurrently with the implementation of the standard health equity intervention. After this planning process, the research team will seek a larger funding source for implementation of the full study. The research team will develop a research plan, partner with Allina Health Equity Steering Committee members to develop an implementation plan and involve frontline providers in the conceptualization of the intervention.
The research team proposes to randomly assign clinics to receiving either: 1) the new standard equity intervention; or 2) the new standard intervention plus individual provider-level patient panel demographics. Further, a random subset of clinics receiving provider panel demographics will be offered an opportunity to engage in a discussion series about their patient panel demographics. Frontline providers’ knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about patient demographics and impact of demographics on health outcomes will be evaluated pre- and post-intervention to test for change across all study conditions.

This project seeks to develop and pilot test an intervention to promote effective dialogues around race and racism in the workplace. To accomplish this, the team engages an interdisciplinary group of experts, which include faculty from the University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic and external collaborators. The collaboration among team members will foster new partnerships and capacity to support future activities.
The team will use its collective expertise and experiences in research, community engagement, antiracism, and group facilitation to develop an intervention to promote critical conversations about race and racism. This project has four phases: content development, interracial group process, content refinement, and pilot testing. In the first phase, the team will purposefully “center on the margins” by prioritizing the knowledge and experiences of people of color, both principal investigators and participants.
The team will pilot the intervention with nursing and medical students, working health care professionals, and/or biomedical and health services researchers, and will collect pre-and post-data from them.
