2. Clinical and Translational Science Institute Now Open
The University’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is open for business. CTSI provides streamlined access to a wide range of services and resources to University and community-based researchers. Its mission is to support collaborative clinical and translational science research aimed at improving the health of our communities.
CTSI’s services include: comprehensive pre-award and post-award assistance with investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored studies through research process managers and clinical research coordinators (initial consultations are free of charge); regulatory assistance with IRB and IND/IDE applications and clinical trial monitoring; biostatistical design and support; inpatient and outpatient research facilities for adult and child participants; and skilled research staff. 3. New Web Resource Addresses Whistleblowing Issues

The University of Alabama has developed a video illustrating how to anticipate issues that would arise in a case of possible misconduct and to think ahead about what to do. It is available for universities and research centers to use free of charge at http://www.uab.edu/graduate/rcr/index.html.
4. Grants.gov Adobe Forms
Adobe Reader versions 8.1.4 and Adobe 9.1 are now available to use with Adobe forms. Free downloads are available at http://www07.grants.gov/help/download_software.jsp.
5. Research.gov
Research.gov is a new initiative to increase customer service for the research community while streamlining and standardizing processes among partner agencies. NSF has partnered with Department of Defense Research Office, NASA and the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service to provide a menu of services focused on the needs of research organizations, from grants application status to project and financial reporting. NSF users can use their FastLane ID and password to gain entry to the site.

Funding Opportunities and Program Announcements
- Minnesota Futures Symposium Grant is a call to propose an interdisciplinary symposium around a topic of current research significance identified by the investigator(s). The symposium should involve scholars from diverse disciplines.
The design and format of the symposium should encourage broad participation, communication, and discussion that formulates new research questions or promotes new ways to address existing research questions with the potential to achieve external funding.
Funding will be available in FY10, so the project start date should be after July 2009.

- CTSI Translational Research Grants are designed to move concepts developed at the University of Minnesota from basic work to clinical testing. Two new grants will be funded in the amount of
up to $200,000
(over two to three years). Proposals require a pairing of at least two co-investigators, either a basic scientist with a translational researcher or a translational researcher with a clinical researcher. AHC faculty members with an N, P, I, J, or K appointment and employment through the University are eligible. For details, visit www.ctsi.umn.edu/funding/trg.

- The American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant is for assistant professors who have no independent national funding and are engaged in cancer-related research. Cancer-related research includes genetic mechanisms of cancer, molecular mechanisms of cancer progression and metastasis, development of novel cancer therapeutic models and translational research, cancer immunology and immunotherapy. Funding is available up to $30,000. Applications may be obtained by calling 612.626.1926 or e-mailing micek003@tc.unn.edu.

- RCR Continuing Education Awareness/Discussion Small Grants Program
The OVPR has an intramural funding opportunity for the development of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) continuing education activities. Small grants of up to $3500 are available to encourage active engagement of research/professional ethics topics. Proposals should fulfill the criteria for Awareness and Discussion activities required of University of Minnesota faculty and PIs every three years.
