1. Stimulus Bill: Updates
Recent news updates regarding the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Stimulus Bill)

- $1.1 billion allocated for comparative effectiveness research

Notice no. 131 includes information on programs that will receive Stimulus funding, prioritization, and special award conditions.
- Proposal deadline calendar now available
Includes a brief description of the announcement, deadlines, links to useful information, and any applicable limited submission criteria. The document will be updated as new information becomes available.
Researchers who are considering an interdisciplinary research proposal that includes the use or creation of high throughput data, as well as the associated issues of data management, analytics, and sharing, can contact Dr. Anne-Francoise Lamblin for guidance on proposal preparation. 2. “Writing Winning Grants” Seminar
“Writing Winning Grants” is a day-long seminar for University faculty and staff who have had exposure to writing grant applications through training, mentoring, or personal experience. The seminar is on Thursday, April 23, 2009, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the
Radisson University Hotel.
The seminar addresses practical and conceptual aspects that are important to the proposal-writing process. The program content is appropriate for senior graduate students, post-doctoral research fellows, and junior faculty members. Space is limited to 100 participants and will fill quickly.
David C. Morrison, Ph.D., an experienced academician, grant manager, and grant-reviewer, will present the seminar. Morrison has a wealth of experience and knowledge in proposal writing which has kept him continuously funded since the early 1970s by NIH (including a ten-year MERIT award), foundations, and industry.

3. University Forum on Research and Professional Ethics
Join Harvey M. Arbit, PharmD, MBA, director of the IND/IDE Assistance Program in the Office of Clinical Research and adjunct associate professor in the College of Pharmacy, for a presentation and discussion about roles and responsibilities for clinical researchers, titled “I Want to do Clinical Research but the FDA Wants me to do What?!?” This OVPR-sponsored event will meet the RCR continuing education Awareness/Discussion requirement, and will be held on Monday, March 30, 2009, 4 – 5:30 p.m. in the President's Room at Coffman Memorial Union. Funding Opportunities and Program Announcements
- National Science Foundation's Geomorphology and Land Use Dynamics program supports innovative research into processes that shape and modify landscapes over a variety of length and time scales. The program encourages research that investigates quantitatively the coupling and feedback among such processes, their rates, and their relative roles, especially in the contexts of variation in climatic and tectonic influences and in light of changes due to human impact. - The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) invites grant applications for research related to occupational safety and health. The purpose of this program is to develop an understanding of the risks and conditions that are associated with occupational diseases and injuries, to explore methods for reducing risks and for preventing or minimizing exposure to hazardous conditions in the workplace, and to translate significant scientific findings into prevention practices and products that will effectively reduce work-related illnesses and injuries.

- The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) solicits applications to study cost-effectiveness of interventions that will improve health outcomes. In addition to interest in cost-effectiveness analyses affiliated with acute and chronic health problems, this program is especially interested in applications that focus on the science areas of quality of life (self-management and symptom management) health promotion/disease prevention, as well as studies using new technologies and improving research methods.
