1. Supercomputing Institute Open House on November 4
The University of Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (MSI) is holding an Open House on November 4, 11:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., on the 4th and 5th floors of Walter Library. University researchers interested in using MSI resources are encouraged to attend. This event is free and open to the public.
Activities:

- Panel discussion, moderated by John Finnegan, Dean of the School of Public Health, with: State Senator Kathy Saltzman; Professor Bin He, Department of Biomedical Engineering; Professor Julie Jacko, Director, Institute for Health Informatics; and Mr. Drew Flaada, Director of Emerging Solutions Development, IBM

2. Graduate Education Transformation Web Page
A new web page about graduate education transformation is now available, including a list of frequently asked questions and answers. The purpose of the pages is to provide an information source for staff, faculty, students, and external partners as the University moves ahead with changes in graduate education. These pages will be updated as decisions are made and new information becomes available. The content was created in a collaborative effort of the Graduate School, Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost for Academic Affairs, and Office of the Vice President for Research. The transition page also can be accessed by a link from the Graduate School home page.

Funding Opportunities and Program Announcements
- For details about Stimulus Bill funding opportunities and news, visit http://www.research.umn.edu/stimulus.html.
- American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grants are for assistant professors who have no independent national funding and are engaged in cancer-related research. Cancer-related research includes genetic mechanisms of cancer, molecular mechanisms of cancer progression and metastasis, development of novel cancer therapeutic models and translational research, cancer immunology and immunotherapy. Funding is available up to $30,000. Applications may be obtained by calling 612.625.2912 or e-mailing morga336@umn.edu.

- The Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives Institute is requesting applications for small research grants to fund faculty research teams or faculty-community collaborations. The grants to be funded through this program must utilize novel and innovative approaches to answer potentially high impact research questions. The request should be highly interdisciplinary, including members from at least three distinct disciplines. The research should have a high potential for growth and for becoming self-supporting over time. Up to three grants will be awarded. Each grant will be awarded to an interdisciplinary team for a project with a maximum total cost of $50,000/yr for two years. For details, visit http://www.hfhl.umn.edu/grants/index.html.
