1. Grants.gov Adobe Updates

Grants.gov announced this week that they will support the latest version of Adobe Reader 8.1.1 along with 7.0.9. Their download software page has both versions: http://www.grants.gov/resources/download_software.jsp. Users will only need to select one of the two versions to have on their computer when submitting grant applications. Other Adobe Reader versions are not supported.

The Adobe proposal package will be phased in by the Grants.gov agencies when posting their new funding opportunities, so check your Adobe reader package and make sure you have one of the supported packages on your computer. When the application is launched, it will open in an Adobe window instead of the Pure Edge viewer.

Help with these or any other Grants.gov issues is available via the Electronic Grants Applications Helpline: 612.624.8989 or grantgov@umn.edu; or the EGMS Helpline: 612.624.1600 or help@egms.umn.edu.

2. VP Mulcahy Appointed IO for Research Subjects’ Protection Programs

On October 19, President Bruininks designated Vice President Tim Mulcahy as the Institutional Official (IO) for the University's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Review Board (IRB), and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). Duties as IO include ensuring compliance with ethical standards, laws, regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and standards of excellence for each committee. If you need to interact with the IO regarding any of these related matters, please contact the Vice President for Research office.

3. University Forum on Research and Professional Ethics

Join Melissa S. Anderson, Ph.D., Director of the Postsecondary Education Research Institute, Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Higher Education, and Associate Professor of Higher Education, for a presentation and discussion about “Trying to Maintain Integrity in a Contrary Research Environment.” This OVPR-sponsored event will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, 4 - 5:30 p.m., in the President's Room at Coffman Memorial Union. • The Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS) program was created in response to a legislative mandate to "increase the numbers of underrepresented minority faculty, investigators, and students engaged in biomedical and behavioral research, and to broaden the opportunities for underrepresented minority faculty and students for participation in biomedical and behavioral research." To accomplish this goal, the Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity (IMSD) program seeks to facilitate and promote, at research institutions with significant number of mentors with National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other extramural research support, the entry into biomedical or behavioral research fields of undergraduate and graduate students from groups underrepresented in these fields. The program provides institutional support for existing or innovative student development activities, including research internships, that will increase students' knowledge, skills, and information as they move to more advanced levels and ultimately attain the Ph.D. degree in biomedical or behavioral research fields. This opportunity limits the number of applications from an institution. To register interest with the University, go to http://www.research.umn.edu/opportunities/limited_applications/. For details, go to http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-06-553.html.
