1. University Research Infrastructure: Six-year Master Plan

Meeting the current and future infrastructure needs of our scholars is critical to the University's continued competitiveness and progress toward its strategic objectives. The Vice President for Research is developing a rolling, six-year strategic plan to identify and support large-scale research infrastructure through a combination of local and central support.

The six-year plan will become the foundation for inclusion of specific research infrastructure needs in biennial budget requests to the state. A list of strategic infrastructure also could provide opportunities to cultivate gifts to meet emerging infrastructure needs.

To assess the gaps in the current research infrastructure and to understand the future needs, the OVPR must rely on the knowledge and vision of faculty and researchers. The OVPR is sponsoring several listening sessions to gather your input. The schedule is available at http://www.research.umn.edu/infrastructure/. If you are unable to attend, you may provide comments and suggestions on the Web site.

2. Time to File End-of-Year REPA Forms

The 2007-2008 REPA (Report of External Professional Activities) filing period will begin on September 29, 2008. Qualifying individuals must complete an end-of-year REPA form to report their external professional activities and interests for the 2007-2008 reporting period (August 26, 2007 - August 25, 2008), even if they have no activities or interests to report.

The deadline for completing the 2007-2008 REPA form is November 7, 2008.

3. Challenges and Tensions in International Research Collaborations

The national conference, Challenges and Tensions in International Research Collaborations, will be at the University of Minnesota October 2-3, 2008.

Scientists with collaborative experience will talk about their experiences, difficulties associated with international collaborations, and ways to make these collaborations work. They will address complications stemming from fundamental, cross-national differences in how science is organized and funded, cultural expectations, laws, regulations, and graduate and postdoctoral systems. The keynote speaker will be Daniel Carucci, director of science at the Foundation of the National Institutes of Health.

For a full list of sessions and other information, visit http://www.international.umn.edu/oriconf. For questions, contact the conference organizer, Dr. Melissa S. Anderson, at mand@umn.edu or 612.624.5717.

4. NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts

The NIH Guide is the official publication for NIH medical and behavioral research grant policies, guidelines and funding opportunities for the National Institutes of Health. To subscribe to the Guide’s weekly listserv or to read it online, go to http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/. The following institute(s)/center(s) have grant opportunities in the current Guide: NIAID and NIDDKD. 5. Funding Opportunities and Program Announcements

  • The Ecology of Infectious Diseases program solicitation supports the development of predictive models and the discovery of principles governing the transmission dynamics of infectious disease agents. Research proposals should focus on understanding the ecological and socio-ecological determinants of transmission by vectors or abiotic agents, the population dynamics of reservoir species, the transmission to humans or other hosts, or the cultural, social, behavioral, and economic dimensions of disease communication. Research may be on zoonotic, vector-borne or enteric diseases of either terrestrial, freshwater, or marine systems and organisms, including diseases of non-human animals and plants, at any scale from specific pathogens to inclusive environmental systems. Proposals for research on disease systems of public health concern to developing countries are strongly encouraged. For details, visit http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2008/nsf08601/nsf08601.htm.
    Deadline: December 10, 2008
