1. Controlled Substance Training

The Office of Regulatory Affairs is offering controlled substance training for anyone new to using controlled substances for research. Training sessions are scheduled for September 19 and October 22, 2007. For full details and to pre-register for a session, go to https://onestop2.umn.edu/training/courseDetail.jsp?course=RA0001.

For more information, contact Cathy Marquardt at marqu005@umn.edu or 612.625.9624.

2. New Master Cooperative Agreement Between U and Hennepin County

To address bureaucratic and legal hassles associated with contracting, a Master Cooperative Agreement between Hennepin County and the University of Minnesota has been developed to streamline the process by which the two organizations initiate joint research projects.

The Master Cooperative Agreement will save University and Hennepin staff weeks or months of work by eliminating the need to renegotiate contract terms for every collaborative project. Rather, work will be outlined and approved with a simple “work order.” The work order template will be accessible online, along with clear instructions on how to prepare the paperwork.

For more information about the agreement please contact Steve Louie at 612.348.2591 or steve.louie@co.hennepin.mn.us. If you would like more information about the Hennepin-University Partnership or recent Hennepin-University collaborations, visit www.umn.edu/hup or contact Kathie Doty, Hennepin-University Liaison, at 612.625.4383 or kdoty@umn.edu.

3. Grants.gov Form Filler Software Training and User Labs

The Grants.gov form filler software Training and User labs has begun. Check the SPA Web page for the dates, times, locations, and registration information: http://www.ospa.umn.edu/GrantGov/Schedules%20and%20Calendars/trainingschedule.html.

4. EGMS Proposal Prep Work Groups

A note of caution: when work groups are deleted it removes access to all work group users. There is no policy on how long work groups should be retained or what members should be part of the group; this remains at the discretion of the initiator and their unit.

5. Office for Technology Commercialization Restructuring

The Office for Technology Commercialization (OTC) is nearing completion of its restructuring begun several months ago. The most recent changes are designed to reinvigorate and refocus OTC to better align with the new value-based approach to technology commercialization at the University of Minnesota. The reorganization enables OTC to better support researchers throughout the commercialization process, and more efficiently move University-based discoveries and innovations into the public marketplace while providing a fair financial return to the University. For more information, go to http://www.research.umn.edu/communications/news/restructuring_otc.html.

6. NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts

The NIH Guide is the official publication for NIH medical and behavioral research grant policies, guidelines and funding opportunities for the National Institutes of Health. To subscribe to the Guide’s weekly listserv or to read it online, go to http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/. The following institute(s)/center(s) have grant opportunities in the current Guide: NIDCR, NIEHS, and NHGRI. Other information includes: Notice of Intent to Publish a Request for Applications for Research on HIV/AIDS and Drug Use in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS) (R03).

7. Funding Opportunities and Program Announcements

The OVPR has an intramural funding opportunity for the development of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) continuing education activities. Small grants of up to $3500 are available to encourage active engagement of research/professional ethics topics. Proposals should fulfill the criteria for Awareness and Discussion activities required of University of Minnesota faculty and PIs every three years.
