3. “Write Winning Grants” Seminar
The University of Minnesota is hosting a one-day grant writing seminar for faculty members and research staff. This seminar, "Write Winning Grants," will be held at the Holiday Inn Metrodome (West Bank) in the Aragon Ballroom on the 1st floor on Wednesday, September 24, from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Online registration is required.
There are two registration processes:
- Faculty and research staff in the Academic Health Center: http://www.ahc.umn.edu/ocr/events/writewinninggrants/registration
- All other University faculty and research staff: http://www.academic.umn.edu/system/reports/grant_writing_seminar.html
4. Research Occupational Health Program Tetanus Requirement
The Office of Regulatory Affairs is now enforcing a tetanus vaccination requirement in its Research Occupational Health Program (ROHP).
Those personnel without tetanus vaccinations are out of compliance and the lab may be considered deficient during fall lab inspections.
Federal regulations mandate that all persons having contact with animals in research be enrolled in an occupational health program and ROHP has two major components: a training component and a medical component. The medical component of ROHP is conducted by Boynton Health Service. Individuals will be notified regarding which medical requirements need to be completed and will need to consult with a health care provider at Boynton. There is no training component for tetanus vaccinations.
Check your ROHP status at https://eresearch.umn.edu/rohp/.
5. ResearchChannel Video Submissions
The ResearchChannel is a network that features academic research and discovery. ResearchChannel programming is available to more than 30 million subscribers through satellite and cable television networks, and via streaming video on its Web site. The channel also is available on 70 university- and school-based cable systems in the United States and was recently launched on iTunes University and YouTube.
The ResearchChannel provides an exciting opportunity to promote research and discovery at the University. You are now invited to submit your video content.
All submissions will be reviewed and rated by the University’s ResearchChannel Advisory Committee members. Based on the rating received, the submissions will be ranked and the top ten hours of programming will be delivered to the ResearchChannel for the 2008-09 academic year.
To view the selection criteria, and for additional information, visit the OIT Video Solutions – ResearchChannel Web site at www.umn.edu/oit/researchchannel. For more information, please contact OIT Video Solutions at OITVideo@umn.edu.
6. Training Sessions on New Policy for Clinical Research
All clinical research projects requesting services from University of Minnesota Physicians and/or Fairview will be required to conform to the Clinical Research Budgeting and Billing policy (www.ahc.umn.edu/ocr/crbb/policy). Principal Investigators (PIs) or delegated staff must use the new database, Time and Study Collection System (TASCS), to delineate the services, drugs, devices, tests, and procedures rendered for clinical research. In addition, the PI (or designee) will also identify who is responsible for paying for each service, drug, device, test, or procedure. PIs or their staff will need to be trained to use the TASCS system, prior to its effective date of September 1.
Additional training sessions have been added; the complete schedule and registration information are available at www.ahc.umn.edu/ocr/crbb/tascstraining.
Questions about this policy can be sent to Assistant Vice President for Research Mark Paller at palle001@umn.edu. Questions about the training program or procedure can be sent to Debra Dykhuis, Office of Clinical Research, at dykhu001@umn.edu.
7. Controlled Substance Training
The Office of Regulatory Affairs is offering controlled substance training for anyone new to using controlled substances for research. There are two training sessions scheduled during fall semester. For full details and to pre-register, visit https://onestop2.umn.edu/

- Research Fellowship in Women’s Health for Junior Faculty
The Women’s Health Scholar will be trained in the Powell Center’s Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) K-12 program funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH). The BIRCWH program fosters the career development of junior faculty members who are engaging in basic, clinical, translational, behavioral, or health services research in any area relevant to women's health with an emphasis on sex and gender factors.

- The
National Science Foundation's
CHE-DMR-DMS Solar Energy Initiative supports interdisciplinary efforts by groups of researchers to address the scientific challenges of highly efficient harvesting, conversion, and storage of solar energy. Groups must include three or more co-Principal Investigators; one must have demonstrated high expertise in chemistry, a second in materials research, and a third in mathematical sciences. The goal is to create a new modality of linking the mathematical with the chemical and materials sciences to develop transformative paradigms in an area of much activity but largely incremental advances. Successful proposals will offer potentially transformative projects and new concepts based on the integrated expertise and synergy from the three disciplinary communities. For details, visit http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2008/nsf08598/nsf08598.htm.
Deadline (preliminary proposal):
