1. National Council of University Research Administrators Videobroadcast
On Septemeber 9, 2008, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the University of Minnesota will present the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) videobroadcast, "Good Customer Service for Research Administrators." It will be shown in the Cowles Auditorium, on the West Bank in the Hubert H. Humphrey Center.
With new demands emerging from sponsors, faculty, and institutional management on a daily basis, how do research administrators define good customer service? The panel of experts will examine who is the customer and what constitutes good customer service. They will look at the roles of the Central Sponsored Programs office and the role of the departmental administrator. The faculty will explore the elements of customer service that work both ways between central and departmental research administrators, and how this relationship is critical to good service to the ultimate customer: the principal investigator. They will discuss how to communicate to customers in a way that lets them know that you are both working toward a common goal.
The sponsor as the customer will also be examined.
To register for this workshop please contact Michael Harris at harri826@umn.edu. Certified Approvers must register online at https://onestop2.umn.edu/training/index.jsp?unit=CA to receive continuing education hours. For more information on the Certified Approver program, go to www.oar.umn.edu/CA/index.cfm. For more details on this and upcoming NCURA programs, go to www.ncura.edu/meetings/.
2. Training Sessions on New Policy for Clinical Research
All clinical research projects requesting services from University of Minnesota Physicians and/or Fairview will be required to conform to the Clinical Research Budgeting and Billing policy (www.ahc.umn.edu/ocr/crbb/policy). Principal Investigators (PIs) or delegated staff must use the new database, Time and Study Collection System (TASCS), to delineate the services, drugs, devices, tests, and procedures rendered for clinical research. In addition, the PI (or designee) will also identify who is responsible for paying for each service, drug, device, test, or procedure. PIs or their staff will need to be trained to use the TASCS system, prior to its effective date of September 1.
Additional training sessions have been added; the complete schedule and registration information are available at www.ahc.umn.edu/ocr/crbb/tascstraining.
Questions about this policy can be sent to Assistant Vice President for Research Mark Paller at palle001@umn.edu. Questions about the training program or procedure can be sent to Debra Dykhuis, Office of Clinical Research, at dykhu001@umn.edu.
3. Controlled Substance Training
The Office of Regulatory Affairs is offering controlled substance training for anyone new to using controlled substances for research. There are two training sessions scheduled during fall semester. For full details and to pre-register, visit https://onestop2.umn.edu/training/courseDetail.jsp?course=RA0001.
For more information, contact Cathy Marquardt at marqu005@umn.edu or 612.625.9624.
4. Study on Suspected Research Misconduct
The Gallup Organization and Office of Research Integrity (ORI) have published results of a study on suspected research misconduct. The study analyzed data from 2,212
National Institutes of Health-supported principal investigators representing 605 universities and research institutions. The findings suggest there is a substantial discrepancy between the amount of research misconduct observed by researchers and the actual number of incidents reported by institutions to ORI. The authors offered recommendations for fostering a culture of integrity. The final report is available at http://ori.hhs.gov/publications/studies.shtml. The complete article is available at http://www.oar.umn.edu/compliance_news.cfm.

Funding Opportunities and Program Announcements
- The Patrick J. Manning Endowment has provided a small grant mechanism (up to $500) to support proposals designed to improve the welfare of animals that support the research mission of the University of Minnesota. Areas in which proposals may be focused include:
refinement (improvements to husbandry and procedures), reduction (methods which minimize animal use),
and replacement (methods that avoid or replace the use of animals).
University of Minnesota civil service, bargaining unit, and student employees are eligible to submit applications. Faculty and P&A staff are not eligible. For details, visit http://www.ahc.umn.edu/rar/manning.html#grant.
Deadline: November 1, 2008
- The University of Minnesota's Public Engagement Seed Grants recognize and aid in funding projects established by members of the University community that will engage and serve the greater community. These projects contribute to the community in numerous ways: research that responds to public needs and concerns, developing motivation and capacity for citizenship and leadership in students, and partnerships with community groups or organizations. The efforts and contributions of these innovative projects will impact the community and provide sustainable and long-lasting change. For details, visit http://www.engagement.umn.edu/awards/index.html.
Deadline: December 2008
- The Science and Technology Centers (STC): Integrative Partnerships program supports innovative research and education projects that require large-scale, long-term investments. STCs conduct world-class research through partnerships among academic institutions, national laboratories, industrial organizations, and/or other public/private entities, and via international collaborations, as appropriate. Their partnerships build intellectual and physical infrastructure within or between disciplines and facilitate the creation, integration, and transfer of new knowledge. This opportunity limits the number of applications from an institution. To register interest with the University, visit http://www.research.umn.edu/opportunities/extramural/UMGuidelines.cfm?oppid=
169&yearid=2008.
