1. Master Confidentiality Agreements with GlaxoSmithKline

When pharmaceutical companies send advance protocols and information regarding prospective trials or collaborations, it is customary for a confidential disclosure agreement (CDA, sometimes referred to as an NDA) to be executed to protect the information they send from improper use by the University. Each company has its own preferred terms and practices, but usually the University still needs to work on an individual agreement. However, the University has executed a blanket CDA for this purpose with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), signed on July 7, 2007, and effective through July 11, 2010. It is generic, so GSK should be able to provide protocols to the University without any added administrative paperwork each time. The three year period covers disclosure of materials, not confidentiality. When you receive anything written from GSK, mark it "confidential in accordance with the CDA dated 7/11/07," and store it in a protected place, sharing information only internally in the University and only as needed to evaluate the project. After five years from the date you receive the information, it can be shredded, but keep a record of that fact that it has been destroyed. For more information, contact Duane Oyen at doyen@umn.edu.

2. EGMS System-to-System Training

The new EGMS to Grants.gov System-to-System (S2S) User Interface functionality is on target to be released soon. Usability evaluations were completed last week; results are being analyzed and the necessary changes will be made to the system. EGMS S2S training is now being scheduled; contact Frances Spalding at 612.625.0848 to be added to a training session.

3. “Smarter” PRF Update

Feedback has been good regarding the enhanced Proposal Routing Form (PRF) and many of the minor nuances that were introduced with it have been resolved. The anticipated parallel routing feature is still under development. However, there have been a few setbacks, and because of them a release date has not yet been scheduled. A definitive release data of the PRF parallel routing feature will be announced in an upcoming edition of the Research News Online.

4. NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts

The NIH Guide represents the final authority on funding policy for the National Institutes of Health. To subscribe to the Guide’s weekly listserv or to read it online, go to http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/. The following institute(s)/center(s) have grant opportunities in the current Guide: NIGMS, NICHHD, and NIDA. Other information includes: Findings of Research Misconduct.

5. Funding Opportunities and Program Announcements

  • The EUREKA (Exceptional Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration) initiative fosters exceptionally innovative research that, if successful, will have an unusually high impact on the areas of science that are germane to the mission of one or more of the participating NIH Institutes. EUREKA is not for support of pilot projects, i.e., projects of limited scope that are designed primarily to generate data that will enable the PI to seek other funding opportunities. For details, go to http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-GM-08-002.html.
Letters of Intent Deadline: September 24, 2007
Application Receipt Deadline: October 24, 2007

  • The National Science Foundation's Informal Science Education (ISE) program invests in projects that develop and implement informal learning experiences designed to increase interest, engagement, and understanding of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by individuals of all ages and backgrounds, as well as projects that advance knowledge and practice of informal science education. Projects may target either public audiences or professionals whose work directly affects informal STEM learning. ISE projects are expected to demonstrate strategic impact, innovation, and collaboration. This opportunity limits the number of applications from an institution. To register interest with the University, go to http://www.research.umn.edu/opportunities/limited_applications/. For details, go to http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf06520&org=NSF.
    U of M Internal Review Deadline: August 15, 2007
    Sponsor's Application Deadline: September 13, 2007

  • Minnesota Futures Grant Program
The Office of the Vice President for Research is pleased to announce a new grant program designed to identify research questions of current significance to multiple disciplines. Modeled after the “Keck Futures Initiative,” the Minnesota Futures Grant Program will encourage University of Minnesota faculty to create new collaborative connections through symposia and act upon those ideas through interdisciplinary research awards. Awards up to $250,000 will be granted. Details of the program, eligibility, evaluation criteria, and application instructions are available at http://www.research.umn.edu/opportunities/intramural/MNFutures.html.
    Deadline: August 1, 2007
