1. Executive Director of Research Integrity and Oversight Hired
Vice President for Research Tim Mulcahy is pleased to announce that Michele Chin-Purcell, Ph.D., has accepted the position of Executive Director of the Office of Research Integrity and Oversight in the Office of the Vice President for Research.
Currently the Director of Global Compliance at Boston Scientific, Dr. Chin-Purcell will join the OVPR on September 8. An alumna of the University, Dr. Chin-Purcell brings a wealth of relevant experience to the position and will be a great addition to the University’s compliance environment.
With Dr. Chin-Purcell's hire the OVPR is also restructuring some of its compliance functions. A revised org chart reflecting these changes is available at http://www.research.umn.edu/

2. Grants.gov and Adobe Reader
Grants.gov announced last week that it had completed testing of the recently released Adobe Reader 9, and concluded that it is compatible with the Grants.gov Adobe forms packages. Adobe Reader 9 joins versions 8.1.1 and 8.1.2 as options for users when completing their Grants.gov packages.
Remember that Grants.gov has naming conventions for attachments for their form sets. Each attachment must carry a
unique name with fewer than 50 characters, containing no spaces or special characters.
3. Powell Center for Women’s Health Internship Program
The Powell Center for Women’s Health is continuing their internship program that connects students with faculty members and community organizations that have an interest in women’s health issues. They are currently accepting applications from interested students for this fall and winter. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. University faculty and staff (who are members of the Powell Center) are encouraged to submit project proposals related to research in women’s health.

Minority Biomedical Research Support
(MBRS) Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) was created in response to a legislative mandate to “increase the numbers of underrepresented minority faculty, investigators and students engaged in biomedical and behavioral research, and to broaden the opportunities for underrepresented minority faculty and students for participation in biomedical and behavioral research.” To accomplish these goals, the Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) program will provide institutional grants for students from groups underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research with well integrated developmental activities that will increase their preparation and skills as they advance academically in the pursuit and successful completion of the Ph.D. degree.
