1. IRB Review of Industry-sponsored Research

Over the past several years the volume of industry-sponsored research at the University has grown significantly. While this is a positive trend, it has led to a dramatic increase in submissions requiring review by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for human subjects in industry-sponsored research. Until now the Research Subjects’ Protection Program (RSPP) has absorbed the cost of these reviews, but this has become increasingly difficult due to the rising costs associated with increased volume.

This has necessitated a change in University policy. After July 1, 2008, all business- and industry-sponsored IRB applications submitted to the IRB will be assessed a one-time initial review fee of $2,500. This is a well-established national trend and is consistent with the policies and fees at Big Ten peer institutions.

Departments should incorporate the review fee in the budget of relevant industry-sponsored research. To make the new fee clear to research sponsors, departments should refrain from referring to any other review fees they charge to sponsors as “IRB review fees.”

You can review the new policy online at http://www.research.umn.edu/irb/bandi.cfm. If you have any questions, please contact Moira Keane in RSPP at (612) 626-4851, or keane002@umn.edu.

2. The Vision for UMore Park

Two upcoming campus forums will provide opportunities for University faculty, staff and students to learn more about the University of Minnesota Outreach, Research and Education (UMore) Park and Vermillion Highlands, and view concept planning scenarios. Your suggestions can help to shape the future of the properties and create opportunities for research and learning experiences. Attend a campus forum and open house or participate live via UMConnect. Please see the event flyer for additional information. RSVP at www.umorepark.umn.edu or by calling 612.626.3798.

Forums:

  • Minneapolis Campus: Monday, June 16, 9:30 a.m. in Coffman Memorial Union, Campus Club, Rooms A, B & C
  • St. Paul Campus: Tuesday, June 17, 12:00 at the Student Center, North Star Ballroom
  • Public Community Forums: Thursday, June 19 and Monday, June 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the Rosemount Community Center
