1. NIH Encouraged to Increase Conflict of Interest Oversight
Excerpted from The Chronicle of Higher Education, June 11, 2009
The Association of American Universities and the Association of American Medical Colleges submitted a joint letter on Wednesday to the National Institutes of Health suggesting ways to increase federal oversight of conflicts of interest in federally supported research. The recommendations are intended to strike a balance between protecting the integrity of research and maintaining productive partnerships between universities and industry. The groups recommended requiring investigators to report to their institutions all financial interests that are related to their research, either directly or indirectly, regardless of the amount. The groups also suggested that the NIH lower, from $10,000 to $5,000, the threshold at which institutions must report to the agency the external financial interests of their researchers.

- The Multiple Sclerosis Research Program (MSRP) is offering $5 million in two funding mechanisms.
The Multiple Sclerosis Metric Development and Validation Awards are designed to develop and/or validate readily accessible, cost-effective, analytical methods that may be utilized to quantify the disease, monitor disease progress, and/or evaluate the efficacy of disease therapies. The Multiple Sclerosis Synergistic Idea Awards are designed to promote innovative ideas and scientific collaborations by supporting novel approaches to MS research that will move the field toward the MSRP vision of preventing the occurrence, reversing or slowing the progression and disability, and lessening the impact of MS. - Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Translational Research Grants are designed to move concepts developed at the University of Minnesota from basic work to clinical testing. This year, two new grants will be funded in the amount of $200,000 or less (over two to three years). Proposals require a pairing of at least two co-investigators, either a basic scientist with a translational researcher or a translational researcher with a clinical researcher. AHC faculty members with an N, P, I, J, or K appointment and employment through the University are eligible. For details, visit www.ctsi.umn.edu/funding/trg.
Deadline: July 17, 2009
- Mellon New Directions fellowships support exceptional faculty members in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who received doctorates within the last 5 to 15 years and whose research interests call for formal training outside of their own disciplines. New Directions Fellowships are meant to be longer-term investments in scholars' intellectual range and productivity. This
grant opportunity requires University coordination because the sponsor has limited the number of applications an institution is allowed to submit.
