1. Challenges and Tensions in International Research Collaborations

The national conference, Challenges and Tensions in International Research Collaborations, will be at the University of Minnesota October 2-3, 2008. 

Scientists with collaborative experience will talk about their experiences, difficulties associated with international collaborations, and ways to make these collaborations work. They will address complications stemming from fundamental, cross-national differences in how science is organized and funded, cultural expectations, laws, regulations, and graduate and postdoctoral systems. The keynote speaker will be Daniel Carucci, director of science at the Foundation of the National Institutes of Health.

2. eSNAP Training


As explained in the April 11 issue of RNO, principal investigators may now submit many of their NIH continuation applications electronically to NIH’s eRA Commons. This process is called e-SNAP.

3. Research Animal Resources Per Diem Rates

Research Animal Resources has established new rates for animal care services (per diem, animal ordering, technical assistance/special services) for fiscal year 2009 (July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009). Rates are available at http://www.ahc.umn.edu/rar/perdiems.html.

4. Annual Women’s Health Research Conference

The Deborah E. Powell Center is proud to present the 5th Annual Women’s Health Research Conference on Monday, September 22, 2008 at the McNamara Alumni Center on the University of Minnesota East Bank Campus. This year’s theme is “Hot Topics in Women’s Reproductive Health.”

You may submit poster abstracts on any topic regarding women’s health or gender specific research across the lifespan. The deadline for abstract consideration is Tuesday, July 1.

5. NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts

The NIH Guide is the official publication for NIH medical and behavioral research grant policies, guidelines and funding opportunities for the National Institutes of Health. 6. Funding Opportunities and Program Announcements

  • The Edward Byrne Memorial Competitive Grant Program is available to national, regional, state, or local public and private entities that support national initiatives. For details, go to http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/BJA/grant/08ByrneCompSol.pdf.

  • The Division of Preservation and Access of the National Endowment for the Humanities will be accepting applications for grants in Humanities Collections and Resources. These grants support projects to preserve and create intellectual access to such collections as books, journals, manuscript and archival materials, maps, still and moving images, sound recordings, art, and objects of material culture. Awards also support the creation of reference materials, online resources, and research tools of major importance to the humanities.   • The Department of Defense Gulf War Illness Research Program promotes innovative research. This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).
