Controlled Substance Training
The Office of Regulatory Affairs is offering controlled substance training for anyone new to using controlled substances for research. The training session is on March 31, 2008. 2. Adobe Reader FAQs for Grants.gov Applications
Grants.gov offers assistance to users of Adobe Reader for completing grant application packages. Instructions now include information on downloading version 8.1.2 of Adobe Reader and using Adobe Acrobat Standard or Professional as a substitute to Adobe Reader. For more information, visit the Adobe Reader section of their Applicant FAQs at http://grants.gov/applicants/applicant_faqs.jsp#adobe.
All Grants.gov applications will require the Adobe Reader by June 30, 2008.
3. IACUC Adds Post-Surgical Monitoring Tip Sheet
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) has published a variety of tip sheets to assist researchers with common issues seen during inspections and site visits.
The latest tip sheet is on Post-Surgical Monitoring and details the requirements for keeping and maintaining inter-operative and post-operative records. The records are essential for the personnel involved in post surgical monitoring, the veterinary staff, the IACUC, and federal regulatory officials.

New Fringe Benefit Rates for FY2009
The University has reached an agreement on the FY09 fringe benefit rates with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), our cognizant agency. The existing and future rates are shown below:
FY09 Rates
Academic =30.40%
Civil Service = 32.70%
Graduate Assistant = 21.90%
FY08 Rates
Academic = 31.6%
Civil Service = 32.70%
Graduate Assistant = 18.9%
The FY09 fringe benefit rates will be effective on July 1, 2008 and must be consistently charged to all funding sources, as required by OMB Circular A-21.
The new rates should be used in sponsored proposal budgets for work that will be conducted on July 1, 2008 and later. PIs and their staff are encouraged to use these new fringe benefit rates immediately. All proposals submitted to SPA on or after April 1, 2008 are expected to incorporate the new rates. EGMS has been updated to reflect the new rates.

5. Negotiating Clinical Trial Budgets and Payment Schedules
The Clinical Research Coordinator Group is offering a presentation, "Negotiating Clinical Trial Budgets and Payment Schedules," on March 25, 2008, 7:30-9:00 a.m. in Moos Tower, 2-520. This session will discuss methods for presenting and explaining the costs of conducting a clinical trial at the U of M and will present tips on successfully negotiating a clinical trial budget with an industry sponsor. The presentation will also recommend guidelines for payment schedules to ensure that funds are available when needed. The session will include a case study example—we'll walk through the negotiation process from "you've got to be kidding" to an amicable and reasonable agreement. This presentation is open to anyone in the research community.

- RCR Continuing Education Awareness/Discussion Small Grants Program
The OVPR has an intramural funding opportunity for the development of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) continuing education activities. Small grants of up to $3500 are available to encourage active engagement of research/professional ethics topics. Proposals should fulfill the criteria for Awareness and Discussion activities required of University of Minnesota faculty and PIs every three years. - American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant applications are being accepted until April 1, 2008. This grant is for assistant professors who have no independent national funding and are engaged in cancer-related research. Cancer-related research includes genetic mechanisms of cancer, molecular mechanisms of cancer progression and metastasis, development of novel cancer therapeutic models and translational research, cancer immunology and immunotherapy.
