2. “Writing Winning Grants” Seminar
“Writing Winning Grants” is a day-long seminar for University faculty and staff who have had exposure to writing grant applications through training, mentoring, or personal experience. The seminar is on Thursday, April 23, 2009, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the
Radisson University Hotel.
The seminar addresses practical and conceptual aspects that are important to the proposal-writing process. The program content is appropriate for senior graduate students, post-doctoral research fellows, and junior faculty members. Space is limited to 100 participants and will fill quickly.
David C. Morrison, Ph.D., an experienced academician, grant manager, and grant-reviewer, will present the seminar. Morrison has a wealth of experience and knowledge in proposal writing which has kept him continuously funded since the early 1970s by NIH (including a ten-year MERIT award), foundations, and industry.

3. University Forum on Research and Professional Ethics
Join Harvey M. Arbit, PharmD, MBA, director of the IND/IDE Assistance Program in the Office of Clinical Research and adjunct associate professor in the College of Pharmacy, for a presentation and discussion about roles and responsibilities for clinical researchers, titled “I Want to do Clinical Research but the FDA Wants me to do What?!?” This OVPR-sponsored event will meet the RCR continuing education Awareness/Discussion requirement, and will be held on Monday, March 30, 2009, 4 – 5:30 p.m. in the President's Room at Coffman Memorial Union. 4. University Research Featured on ResearchChannel
Videos submitted by University of Minnesota departments have been featured on ResearchChannel, a consortium of leading research and academic institutions to share the valuable work of researchers with the public. Recent contributions from the U include:
ResearchChannel is available to nearly 38 million satellite and cable television subscribers and the Web site is visited by 2 million visitors each year. The channel is also available on more than 80 university-and school-based cable systems in the United States and in other countries.

5. Research Animal Resources Customer Satisfaction Survey Results
Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2008 customer satisfaction survey regarding the services of Research Animal Resources. 6. National Council of University Research Administrators Video Broadcast
On March 19, 2009, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the University of Minnesota will present the National Council of University Research Administrators' (NCURA) January video broadcast, "Audits and the Audit Process." It will be shown in 2-620 Malcom Moos Tower.
This program will discuss the audit process and the differences between audits, reviews, inspections and investigations. It will also look at how auditors approach an audit, and the various institutional roles including that of the institutional audit and compliance officer, the central research administrator, and the departmental research administrator.

Funding Opportunities and Program Announcements
- National Science Foundation's EarthScope is an Earth science program to explore the 4-dimensional structure of the North American continent. The EarthScope Program provides a framework for broad, integrated studies across the Earth sciences, including research on fault properties and the earthquake process, strain transfer, magmatic and hydrous fluids in the crust and mantle, plate boundary processes, large-scale continental deformation, continental structure and evolution, and composition and structure of the deep-Earth. This solicitation calls for single or collaborative proposals to conduct scientific research associated with the EarthScope Facility and support activities that further the scientific and educational goals of EarthScope.
