In a July 8 meeting, Interim
Vice President for Research David Hamilton
brought together officials from major community businesses, high-tech
trade groups, local city planners, and the University to lobby for
the establishment of a research park located between the Minneapolis
and St. Paul campuses.
At that meeting, Mitchell Horowitz,
strategy director for the Technology Partnership Practice at Battelle
Memorial Institute, presented information on the complex nature
of creating such a research park, which will require several years
of development time. As a senior official in Battelle's technology-based
economic development group, Horowitz has worked with other cities,
including Denver, the Chicago metro area, Baltimore, Atlanta, and
Pittsburgh, to design similar initiatives. He cautioned that the
involvement of community partners, including businesses and government
entities, would be instrumental to the University's success in this
venture.
Both Minneapolis and St. Paul have demonstrated interest in the
research park proposal by signing memorandums of understanding to
work with the University on this project. Both cities have suggested
several possible sites located near the transitway that connects
the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses.
