About the Office of the Vice President for Research

Annually, University of Minnesota faculty are awarded over 500 million dollars in competitively funded grants and contracts. In addition, the University has helped establish more than 30 start-up companies over the last five years and now holds over 650 active technology transfer agreements with business and industry. As the state's primary research institution, the University receives 98 percent of all federally sponsored research grants awarded to higher education institutions in Minnesota.

The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) oversees all aspects of research at the University of Minnesota's five campuses, providing guidance to individual researchers and managing the system-wide research enterprise. The Vice President for Research at the University of Minnesota is R. Timothy Mulcahy.

In addition to its general administrative office, the OVPR is home to several administrative programs or units that focus on particular facets of the research process:

Office for Technology Commercialization
Protects and licenses University-developed technologies, and nurtures University technologies with start-up potential.
Sponsored Projects Administration
Supports faculty in seeking, acquiring, and managing externally sponsored funding for research, training, and public service projects.
Research Subjects’ Protection Programs
Ensures the safety, rights, and wellbeing of research subjects by reviewing and monitoring the use of human and animal subjects and the use of potentially hazordous biological agents in research.
Fostering Integrity in Research, Scholarship, and Teaching
Facilitates education programs for researchers by providing a comprehensive curriculum to help faculty meet the challenge of responsible conduct of research and scholarship.
Oversight, Analysis, and Reporting
Promotes compliance awareness through assistance, education, and communication.
Collaborative Research Services [web site coming soon]
Encourages and supports collaborative activities,opportunities and resources.
Regulatory Affairs
Ensures the quality and integrity of University research and facilitates ethical and responsible research through education, monitoring and resources.

eResearch Systems Support
Develops and supports online research applications.

Council of Research Associate Deans

Reviews and provides guidance on research-related policies and initatives and serves as a forum for the University's research colleges to exchange information.
